The history of Tampa Bay’s major league baseball team divides neatly in half — 10 seasons as the stumbling and hopeless Devil Rays, 10 more as the clever and resourceful Rays. Last season’s 94 loss debacle did not fit with the revival, but the Rays earned their last place finish in the American League East and the skepticism that followed them to spring training.

“I think the judgment of our team was probably pretty fair going into the season, with the struggles we had last year,” starter Alex Cobb said at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. “But I also know that in the clubhouse http://www.raysfanaticsjersey.com/evan-longoria-jersey-c-17.html, there was this — I wouldn’t even say quiet confidence — there was a loud confidence among the guys that we’re better than that.”

Cobb can be a free agent after the season, and for a low budget team, that made him a likely trade candidate in the event that the Rays struggled again. Yet there was a veteran reliever, Dan Jennings, lugging a Chicago White Sox equipment bag into the Tampa Bay clubhouse Thursday afternoon after he was acquired in exchange for a prospect. Then, just before game time, the Rays announced a trade with the Mets for the slugging first baseman Lucas Duda.

They were not quite in playoff position, trailing the Yankees and the Kansas City Royals for wild card spots and the Boston Red Sox for the division lead. But with a 53 49 record before Thursday’s game, the Rays were poised for a pennant race as they chase their first playoff berth in four years.

“We’ve shot out to an early lead and hung on, and we’ve fallen behind and come back. These guys have a lot of grit, and when you watch them every day, they don’t quit. You see it every day, the vibe in the clubhouse, the way they believe in themselves. It makes you want to help them as much as you can.”

Bloom said the Rays had not planned for upgrades at the positions Duda will play — first base and designated hitter — or at shortstop, where Adeiny Hechavarria has thrived in the field since arriving in a trade from Miami last month. But the goal was to build a deeper roster wherever they could, Bloom said, and those deals have helped.

With Duda, Hechavarria, reliever Sergio Romo, infielder Trevor Plouffe and Jennings — a left hander who has held lefties to a .169 average this season — the Rays have added five veterans since mid June. The message has resonated with the players.

“Just adding pieces to help us says, ‘We’re here for you’ from the front office,” said outfielder Steven Souza Jr., who had 21 homers and 63 runs batted in entering Thursday. “That’s a great sign as an organization to come together for one cause and believe in something together.”

Souza is one of several holdovers who have improved significantly over last season; so have first baseman Logan Morrison, outfielder/designated hitter Corey Dickerson and starters Cobb and Chris Archer. Third baseman Evan Longoria, the team’s centerpiece since 2008 Curt Casali Jersey, has had another solid season 15 homers, 61 R.B.I. after a frustrating winter.

When the Rays traded second baseman Logan Forsythe to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Jose De Leon in January, Longoria told The Tampa Bay Times that he was “surprised and upset” at the deal. The Rays made modest winter moves, signing catcher Wilson Ramos and the departed outfielder Colby Rasmus, but both have made an impact in Forsythe’s absence.

“It was a big blow http://www.raysfanaticsjersey.com/tim-beckham-jersey-c-15.html, and I voiced my opinion on that; Logan was a good friend and an even better teammate and influence in the clubhouse,” Longoria said. “It’s always tough when you trade guys like that away. But having Wilson Ramos back healthy is a big addition, and although Colby is not with us anymore, he made big contributions in the early part of the season. The pieces have come together well for us.”

The Rays have some speed in outfielder Mallex Smith, and should get Kevin Kiermaier — the peerless center fielder — back from injury in early August. But mostly they are a boom or bust offense, leading the A.L. in strikeouts while ranking third in homers before Thursday.

Their starting pitchers have been critical to their success, logging more innings than any rotation in the majors besides Boston going into Thursday’s games. The rotation’s earned run average, 3.92, ranked just behind Houston’s for best in the A.L., and the Rays have a streak of 501 consecutive games started by pitchers under 30 years old.

“The real advantage is the continuity, the compassion we show each other and the way we’re able to relate to each other http://www.raysfanaticsjersey.com/logan-forsythe-jersey-c-16.html,” Cobb said. “It makes for a nice flow, a nice turnover, that when we do lose somebody, there’s not that huge age gap for the young guy who comes up. Guys feel comfortable up here at an early age. We’re all relatable to each other, and we’re able to help each other.”

They will need all the help they can get for a while, with their next five series against the contending Yankees, Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. But the roster is fortified, and the Rays believe they are ready.

“We’re playing some really good teams coming up, but this is what you do this for,” Bloom said. “You want to be in this position, and we’re really excited about it.”

n Monday s series opener against the Rockies, Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk achieved something he d never done before in his big league career.

The slugger hit his fourth home run in as many games, doubling his longest previous streak of games with a homer. He was named Monday s player of the game and was interviewed on the Busch Stadium field afterwards.

In Wednesday s 10 5 win, Grichuk recorded another career high four base hits in one game.

There was no player of the game honor or standing ovation. http://www.cardinalsfanaticsjersey.com/matt-adams-jersey-c-15.html The hits were all singles, much less exciting to fans than balls smacked over the fence.

But for the boom or bust Grichuk, Wednesday s feat might be more surprising than his home run streak.

Grichuk has struck out in 32 percent of his at bats this season. When he s playing well offensively, the slugger makes up for his high number of strikeouts with frequent home runs, like he did last week.

But when his power is slumping, Grichuk and his high strikeout rate become a liability. In May, he was sent to the Cardinals training facility in Jupiter, Fla. to work on his strike zone awareness. He then played 14 games for Class AAA Memphis, only returning to the Cardinals when Dexter Fowler was placed on the DL with a heel spur.

Grichuk s first at bat Wednesday was a familiar sight. He chased a Jeff Hoffman slider down and away for strike three. But Grichuk reversed the trend in his second at bat when he lined a hit through the gap into right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The hit proved important. Grichuk scored three batters later, when starting pitcher Carlos Martinez hit a single of his own. Grichuk s run momentarily tied the game at 4 4, and the Cardinals went on to score three more runs in the inning, seizing a lead they wouldn t relinquish.

The right handed Grichuk said the Rockies left the gap between first and second base open during his at bats, so he took advantage. His hit in the sixth inning passed through the same opening. Overall, Grichuk said the performance resulted from him taking advantage of the opportunities presented to him rather than trying to swing for the fences an approach he might not have taken earlier this season.

Just try to take the knock that they give me, don’t try to do too much, Grichuk said of his approach. I also had a little bit of luck on my side http://www.cardinalsfanaticsjersey.com/aledmys-diaz-jersey-c-17.html, too, in some other at bats.”

As he suggested, two of Grichuk s hits came on fairly routine ground balls, though he certainly helped his case with his speed from home plate to first base. In the fifth inning, he beat out a throw from Rockies shortstop Trevor Story. In the eighth he hit a soft grounder to first baseman Mark Reynolds, but reliever Adam Ottavino failed to step on the bag after running over and receiving Reynolds toss.

The rest of the Cardinals lineup mirrored Grichuk s approach.

The team recorded 15 hits on the night http://www.cardinalsfanaticsjersey.com/matt-carpenter-jersey-c-16.html, and only its first two runs came via homer. During the pivotal fourth inning, in which the Cardinals scored five runs, the team put five runners on base with three singles, a double and a walk.

Shortstop Paul DeJong, who is enjoying a Grichuk like power surge with eight homers in July, including the two run shot in the first inning Wednesday, described the team s offensive performance as passing the baton to the next hitter.

Right now I think our offense is really the best I’ve seen it since I’ve been up here,” DeJong said.

When asked whether a performance like Wednesday s was more valuable to the team than, say, Monday s, when he went one for four with a homer, Grichuk said it depends on the situation. When hits are hard to come by, he said the home run might be more valuable. But he agreed with DeJong that the next man up mentality that the team showed offensively Wednesday spurred the sweep clinching victory.

Gricuk s performance was also important for him personally. Power surges inevitably give way to droughts, but if he can continue to get on base like he did Wednesday when he s not hitting a home run every day Eric Fryer Jersey, he believes he can earn an everyday role in the crowded Cardinals outfield.

It’s definitely a numbers game, and base hits, getting the average up, getting the on base percentage up, that’s definitely good to stay up here and stay in the lineup.”

It’s time to sell. But the bigger question for the Blue Jays is Sell what?

Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins are caught in a spiral of sorts. Their greatest assets — Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, Roberto Osuna, Josh Donaldson — are worth keeping and building around.

Their name value in expiring contracts — Jose Bautista, Marco Estrada, Francisco Liriano — could be sent packing, assuming Bautista agrees, but will bring back little of consequence except payroll savings for the final two months of this hugely disappointing season.

So, what can they do in the next week as the first major league trade deadline approaches? They can try and find a home for Kendrys Morales. They can pick up the phone and find out if anyone believes, even with a financial incentive, that Troy Tulowitzki is still Troy Tulowitzki. They can dangle J.A. Happ, but only for real value because he can be part of a decent starting rotation a year from now.
There isn’t any blueprint here that seems to make sense.

You can have a starting rotation next season that begins with Stroman, Sanchez and Happ. That’s decent. You can have an infield with Justin Smoak, a healthy Devon Travis and Donaldson next season. Assuming Smoak is real, that’s decent. But you need some speed, and some gap hitters and two corner outfielders and a blister to heal, but then, where are you?

It’s easy to say sell and blow it up. It makes for wonderful sports radio talk. But what are you selling and what are you left with after the blow up? And what is on the field next season?

The only players of real value are the ones you want to hang on to. That’s the challenge for Shapiro and Atkins. Finding the right strategy. The answers here aren’t obvious.

One of the largest ovations ever heard in Toronto Estrada leaving the mound at the Rogers Centre against Kansas City in the 2015 American League Championship Series. Hard to believe that this Estrada and that Estrada are the same pitcher. He was Mr. Cool then. He’s Lost Boy now … Estrada has started six post season games for the Jays. He has a 2.16 earned run average in his 41 innings pitched. The great Clayton Kershaw has a 4.55 earned run average in his past six playoff starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers … Worst NBA season. Best NBA off season. Even if you wanted to, you couldn’t invent the Kyrie Irving ‘I want to be traded’ story … Next question Does Masai Ujiri pick up the phone, just to find out what Cleveland wants for Irving. Irving doesn’t have a no trade deal, even if he’s requested future locations. Don’t think you could deal Kyle Lowry for Irving but, if you could, and there weren’t contract provisions indicating otherwise, I’d do it … And what if the new Cavaliers general manager, Koby Altman, did the unusual and said ‘No, I’m not trading Irving.’ How bold would that be?

I love hockey negotiations. The Stanley Cup champions played Brian Dumoulin on their first defence pair in the playoffs and now are trying to lowball him in salary arbitration … Nashville is doing the same with Austin Watson, who played large playoff minutes. It’s like David Poile tells agents on occasion “I love your player at 2 million. I hate him at 3 million.” … The Dodgers have a 57 20 record since calling up Cody Bellinger. That’s .740 baseball. That’s 120 win pace … The upper NHL brass will tell you there is no contingency plan for NHL players to go to the Olympics in South Korea, so I wonder Why hasn’t Hockey Canada or USA Hockey named coaches and general managers for the next Olympics? It’s expected Sean Burke and Willie Desjardins will head up Team Canada. But it’s almost August, and still no announcement … This is unusual Marita Payne, Andrew Wiggins’ mom, held the 200 metre sprinting record in Canada for 34 years. It was broken the other day by Crystal Emmanuel. It isn’t often you see a track record last that long … If the Jays can move Morales and lose Estrada, Bautista and Liriano in free agency, that gives them nice pocket change of 55 million for Shapiro and Atkins to play with … Is it just me, or does Brandon Banks look less dangerous than he used to be? He used to be the best thing to watch in the CFL.

If Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid weren’t in the conversation — and maybe Andre De Grasse, depending on what happens at the worlds — Joey Votto could be a legitimate Lou Marsh Award contender this year. Over the past 162 games he’s played, all he’s done is bat .351 with an on base percentage of .458, 36 home runs, 113 RBIs and 118 walks. If only he wasn’t playing for the last place Cincinnati Reds … Did you see the Aaron Judge home run on Friday night in Seattle? If you didn’t, find it. They’re still looking for the baseball … Some Blue Jays scores in July 13 3, 11 1, 19 1, 12 2, 15 1, 7 1. That’s a team that has stopped caring. Some Blue Jays scores in June 11 4, 11 4, 8 1, 7 0, 12 2. And to think http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/josh-thole-jersey-c-14.html, they’re just a 10 game winning streak away from contention … Every kid I know keeps the ticket from the first sporting event they ever attended, or maybe the biggest one. And now the Montreal Canadiens aren’t just getting rid of tickets. They’re charging extra for them. How dumb is that? My bet They’ll end up changing that policy … This is why soccer is more quaint than most sports. In hockey or basketball, it’s a game time decision on a player’s lineup status. In soccer, it’s not a game time decision. The player is simply eligible for selection.

This is the last year on Lou Lamoriello’s contract with the Maple Leafs. In tandem, that’s not a good combination … Bo Levi Mitchell has started 55 games for the Calgary Stampeders. His won loss record is a spectacular 45 8 2 … It was worth staying up late for Winnipeg B.C., on Friday night. A crazy, fun, football game … I’d like a week to go by when one of my friends in the industry doesn’t announce this is their final day at wherever they happen to work … Chicago , the Blackhawks, struggling. Chicago, the band, still getting it done … This is weird The light hitting Ryan Goins has more doubles and more RBIs than Tulowitzki in a similar number of at bats … What’s the record for most times on the disabled list in a single season and is Sanchez close? … Larry Fitzgerald, who will be in the NFL Hall of Fame one day http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/russell-martin-jersey-c-13.html, has chosen not to play in the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 3 … Johnny Gaudreau, who grew up in the Jersey Philadelphia area, said it would be neat to play near home one day and everybody goes screaming to their windows. Who had the best two seasons in modern Toronto sporting history?

Was it the two MVP record breaking Grey Cup seasons for Doug Flutie and the Argos, the team finishing 34 6 in 1996 and ’97?

Was it the two seasons in which Doug Gilmour carried the Maple Leafs to the conference finals in 1992 94, scoring 301 points, 63 of those coming in the post season?

Was it the two Cy Young seasons for Roger Clemens? He was 41 13 with a microscopic earned run average for two rather ordinary Blue Jays teams?

Was it the first two Josh Donaldson seasons in Toronto, the first as MVP, the second as MVP contender?

Others to think about Jose Bautista hitting 54 home runs one year http://www.jaysfanaticsjersey.com/darwin-barney-jersey-c-15.html, 43 the next; Ed Belfour’s first two years with the Leafs. Vince Carter’s second and third season with the Raptors, before he started pouting; the 39 goals Sebastian Giovinco scored in his first two Toronto FC campaigns.

Flutie has the championships from a league, frankly, where the numbers indicate it’s easier to win championships. Gilmour came close. Donaldson came close.

It’s a fun conversation. The thing is, as you were watching Flutie or Gilmour or Carter or Bautista or any of them, the wonder was Would you ever see anything like this again?

That’s what makes it so special.

He would sit in the second row in the SkyDome football press box when Doug Flutie played QB for the Argos. Usually by himself. But A.J. Smith was there, almost every game, watching Flutie play, the only NFL scout there on a regular basis.

At a time when few believed Flutie could succeed in the NFL anymore — he was 35 in his final of two Argos championship seasons — Smith, who would make the trek from Buffalo to watch Flutie play, all the time believing.

Smith went to his boss, Bills general manager John Butler, and told him what he thought He figured that not only could Flutie play in the NFL, he could succeed. Butler wasn’t convinced. But he went along with his scout, figuring he had little to lose.

Were it not for his two seasons in Toronto, for which Ryan Goins Jersey he is being honoured on Monday night, Flutie would not likely have gotten the opportunity to play eight additional seasons in the NFL, three for Butler and Smith in Buffalo, four for Butler and Smith, who later became general manager in San Diego.

Flutie, who wound up playing 12 NFL seasons before and after his CFL time, started 30 games for the Bills in his late 30s and finished with a very impressive 21 9 won loss record. The Bills went to the playoffs in 1998 and 1999 seasons, following the two Toronto Grey Cup seasons. They haven’t played a playoff game since Flutie left the Bills.

      Well, this was “fun.”

The scoring began early. To start the first, Matt Joyce walked, Marcus Semien singled, Yonder Alonso K’ed Khris Davis walked, then Ryon Healy grounded out, scoring Joyce. 1 0 Oakland. Bruce Maxwell then singled, scoring Semien and Davis. 3 0 Oakland.

Manaea retired Jose Bautista to start the bottom half. Maxwell then got hit in the face with a foul ball and had to be checked. Not that I wanted him to come out of the game, but I would be curious to see who catches with Phegley freshly on the DL. Luckily http://www.athleticsfanaticsjersey.com/billy-burns-jersey-c-21.html, Maxwell carried on. Russell Martin struck out, but then Josh Donaldson homered. Of course. 3 1 Oakland.

Click here to revisit today’s Game Thread!

In the top of the second, it became clear that Marcus Stroman was suffering from some command issues which were only bolstered by Will Little’s atrocious strike zone. He walked Joyce and Semien, but the A’s were unable to capitalize.

Manaea sent the Jays down 1 2 3 in the bottom half.

Maxwell got his second hit of the day in the third inning, but Davis, Healy, and Matt Chapman went down easy.

Manaea once again retired Kevin Pillar, Darwin Barney, and Bautista in order in the bottom half.

Jaycob Brugman singled to start the fourth inning, but he was promptly erased as he was caught stealing Russel Martin has put a stop to over 20 of stolen base attempts this year . Joyce an Semien both singled — they were a combined 6 for 6 on the day after that , but were unable to score.

AGAIN, Manaea struck out Martin, Donaldson, and Justin Smoak in order.

The fifth inning is where things got crazy.

Stroman walked Davis again, but Healy grounded into a double play. With Maxwell batting http://www.athleticsfanaticsjersey.com/danny-valencia-jersey-c-20.html, Toronto manager John Gibbons came out to argue the ball three call, and was ejected. Then after calling a suspect ball four, Stroman broke. He charged umpire Will Little drew an ejection, obviously , and then his catcher was ejected as well. To recap, the manager plus his full battery was ejected on one pitch.
      Honestly? Get ‘em, Marcus.

Catcher Miguel Montero came in to replace Martin, and Chris Smith took over for Stroman.

Kendrys Morales promptly took Manaea deep to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Despite giving up a double to Kevin Pillar, Manaea escaped the innings otherwise unscathed. 3 2 Oakland.

Rosales singled in the top of the 6th inning, but A’s bats were otherwise quite.

Bautista doubled to start the bottom half. Montero and Donaldson both flew flied? out, but Smoak singled Bautista home. Tie game.

In the top of the seventh, Joe Smith replaced Chis Smith, and walked Alonso. That was all the action.

Troy Tulowitzki got in scoring position with a towering ground rule double in the bottom half of the inning. Darwin Barney singled to right field, and Tulo tried to score. Joyce gunned him down at home to protect the tie.
Righty Ryan Tepera took over the mound in the eight Chapman grounded out and Brugman singled. Jed Lowrie — who has been thrown out only once his career, conveniently by Will Little — pinch hit for Rosales. Brugman advanced on a wild pitch, and Lowrie walked. Joyce struck out, but Semien having himself a day/week, I might add singled him home. 4 3 Oakland. Lowrie and Semien advanced on a wild pitch to Alonso http://www.athleticsfanaticsjersey.com/coco-crisp-jersey-c-22.html, but he went on to strike out.

Ryan Dull took over in the bottom of the inning, making his first appearance in two months. He got an angry Bautista looking. Miguel Montero grounded out. Donaldson singled and Blake Treinen came in to retire Justin Smoak on one pitch. That out was deemed a “pop out to left field,” which doesn’t begin to do Matt Chapman justice

Treinen got out of the inning with a slick play to eventually get Barney out at first on a replay.

Chapman, Brugman, and Lowrie went down quickly in the top of the 10th, but not without another showdown between Will Little and Lowrie.

Liam Hendriks came out of for the bottom half. He retired Bautista, walked Montero, K’ed Donaldson, then walked Smoak. He worked Kendrys Morales to a full count, then walked him too. He then worked Steve Pearce to a full count Sean Doolittle Jersey, which ended in an a walk off grand slam.

      Final 8 4 Blue Jays

Bob Melvin has been at 999 wins since the weekend. Maybe he’ll just quit before 1,000.
